Socks Anyone?

by Kristin Page on March 24, 2012

Wow I failed at getting back into blogging now didn’t I? I swear things are back to semi-normal and I really will be posting more updates! I’m also back to a little more knitting time in life!

I’m continuing on my goals for 2012 in finishing one project from 2011 or before a month. February and March became sock months as I wrapped up two of the six pairs of socks I had on the needles. (We won’t talk about the pair I cast on last weekend).

First up was my Christmas Socks.

I swore up and down that I would not cast these on as soon as I got them in the mail. Yet, I did. They were the November 2011 Rockin Sock Club! They are the Candied Cufflet Comfort Socks in the Colorway Comfort and Joy. It’s not currently available on the site but it will be NEXT year!

I loved the colors and I loved these socks. It is a little odd that a Christmas sock would have a short cuff but I don’t really mind. I wear them anyways!

The other pair of socks I finished was  “just another pair of socks”. One thing I tried to do a lot in 2011 was expand my knitting skills. Part of that was I switched and tried Wendy’s Toe Up With Gusset sock from Socks from the Toe Up and did it on magic loop. In the end I determined I hate magic loop so I won’t be going back to that with socks. I did do two full pairs of socks to determine that I hate it!

These were done out of an Opal yarn whose colorway I have lost the tag for! They were fun socks and they are very comfortable now that they are done!

For the rest of this month I’m wrapping up some baby projects I’m behind on for some people and working on my husband’s socks that I gave him an IOU for at Christmas! :)

What’s on your needles?

Watching the ‘Daybreak’ on 2012

by Kristin Page on January 31, 2012

Daybreak by Stephen West

Just a warning: this is a long and semi-personal entry. I’ve been thinking about it for close to a month so it is long and I talk a lot but it explains where I have been and where I am going :) If you don’t feel like getting the details, look at the pretty pictures.

When I first started knitting, I knit scarves for a bunch of my friends. It was my freshman year of college and “fun fur” was cool. I knit a lot of fun fur that year. I wouldn’t have called myself a ‘selfish knitter’ by any means but I tended to split my knitting time about 50/50 (except when it came to socks. I’ve knit baby blankets, baby hats, booties, sweaters, hats and socks for other people. It was kind of just what I did.

2011 was a very eye opening year for me. Over the summer I took on some knitting for some friends who needed some baby knits and I knit for my amazingly beautiful new niece. In the midst of it I threw in my wedding knitting. Overall my knitting time was limited. I was trying to figure out my career, working a bunch of extra hours, planning my wedding and facing some tough realities that I wasn’t ready to deal with.

In the end 2011 turned out to be the best and the worst year of my life. I married my best friend and I lost my dad.

In the midst of the stress with my dad being sick, switching jobs and getting married I kind of put my knitting aside. I took on too many Christmas knits (and failed to get some done) and left people hanging who I owed presents for their children and other people’s children. I hit a point where I just didn’t care about my knitting. None of it was for me so I didn’t care about the deadlines.

Let’s just say December got stressful and in the end I kept putting my knitting down after casting on a bunch of new projects. The first week of January I spent with my mom and my husband planning my dad’s funeral and dealing with the fact that we walked in the hospital to say goodnight and had to say goodbye without even realizing it until it happened.

That week I decided to set my knitting goals for 2012. A number of podcasts were talking about it so I decided why not. That’s when I decided to change it up. This year I’m going to be selfish. 2012 is all about me when it comes to knitting.

There are projects stored all around my house that need to be finished. There are blankets from 5 years ago that need to be finished. So I decided that 2012 is the year I’m going to do that. (okay one blanket is my goal… two is pushing it!)

Each month I’m going to focus on one or two projects that were cast on prior to December 31, 2011. This may be socks, this may be shawls, this may be blankets and there is even a sweater in the mix. They are to be finished up by the last day of the month.

I need to get some of it finished up. I decided not to participate in the Rockin Sock Club this year. It is the first year in 3 years that I’m not doing it and while I’m sad, I need to get some of this stuff knit up before I can justify joining. Next year :)

Let’s talk about January

For January I decided it was time to finish the shawl I cast on while in Cleveland for Content Marketing World. I LOVED this shawl when I saw it hanging up at stitches but it took everything in me to get my wedding stuff done before casting it on. Then I put it down.

Daybreak by Stephen West

The first part of this shawl was frustrating. There’s a lot of “knit to middle of X.” Then I got to the stripes…. oh the stripes. That was the moment I fell in love with Stephen West (his designs… not him… but he’s pretty much awesome at writing knitting patterns). It was one stripe after another…

Finished Daybreak

I finished tonight just in time for the end of the month. It is blocking right now. I’m not sure it is supposed to curve at the top but I think my edge stitches were a little tight and I don’t care. I’m in love with this shawl. He did an AMAZING job and I can’t wait to get to wear it!

The details:

Pattern: Daybreak
Yarn: Wollmeise 100% Merino Superwash in My Old Blue Jeans & Art Yarns UltraMerino 4 in 132.
Needles: US4

What Else?

Starving ArtistIn the midst of my Stephen West Daybreak obsession, I did knit a hat for a high school friend who is going through chemo right now. It is made out of Cascade Chunky Baby Alpaca and it is the Starving Artist pattern. I love this pattern and the yarn and I hope she is able to get some good use out of it.

What does February Bring?

In less than an hour in central time zone February starts. So what does that mean? It means more blogging, more updates and lots more knitting.

My motivation is back and I’m having fun knitting again. This February I plan on finishing up two pairs of socks, one literally has 4 inches and a toe to go and the other pair has a little longer. I miss knitting socks so I figured I would pick them back up. I also have another hat to make for another friend getting ready to undergo chemo. Cancer sucks (just in case you were wondering).

One of my goals this year outside of knitting is to write every night. Right now it consists of letters to my dad but at the same time I do plan on writing more in my blogs. I have to move my other one and get it back up and running but I plan to make my knitting blog a more regular thing. Now that my life is starting to calm down (and stays that way for a bit) you will hear more from me. I also am hoping to get this blog slightly more interactive in the future. So please subscribe for regular updates :)

With that being said… What are YOUR knitting goals for 2012? Leave a comment, I want to know what everyone else is doing!

Crazy Cabled Hat Pattern

by Kristin Page on January 20, 2012

Crazy Cabled HatMonths after initially writing this pattern it has finally been released!

I originally wrote this pattern up before Thanksgiving and I had a wonderful test knitter named Cathy who test knit the whole thing over Thanksgiving weekend. She sent me some awesome feedback, and then my life kind of went insane.

The hat pictured above was knit up with some of my handspun, which is around the same weight as Cascade 220. The hat will work with any worsted weight yarn and I can’t wait to see it knit up in more yarns.

The hat features 1×1 cables in a “crazy’ pattern to add a little bit of fun to your hat.

If you have cabled before, you can knit this hat. So head on over to Ravelry and buy now. It is a fairly simple pattern overall.

Make sure to tag your projects on Ravelry! Happy Knitting!

P.S. Regularly scheduled blogging returning in the next week :)

What Not to do to a Knitter… the Week Before Christmas

by Kristin Page on December 17, 2011

We all know what “Santa” does The Night Before Christmas and we’ve seen lists from the Yarn Harlot of “What to Buy a Knitter for Christmas” but many people forget to warn non-knitters how to handle a knitter around Christmas time.

So, loved ones of knitters… with one week left until the biggest deadline of the year for knitters, here are a few things NOT to do your favorite knitter as this holiday approaches.

10. Hide their needles.
It doesn’t matter what else needs to be done that day, the presents will not be finished if the needles are nowhere to be found!

9. Reorganize their knitting closet.
We have our knitting closets organized JUST the way we like them!

8. Force them to destash.
Really? you can’t wait until AFTER the holiday to bring this stress?

7. Question the pile of laundry starting to grow.
Don’t do it, just don’t. You’ll be safer if you just let it be.

6. Give them a countdown till Christmas.
Please just let us live believing we really have more than a week… it will be better for you. Trust me.

5. Ask them if they will really have enough time to complete all of their projects before Christmas.
Keep it up and you’ll get yarn and needles for Christmas

4. Complain about the number of projects they currently have on the needles.
Having multiple items on the needles keeps them from losing their sanity over one project.

3. Hide their yarn.
You really don’t want them to finish their Christmas gifts do you?

2. Ban them from purchasing yarn.
Buying yarn is great stress relief and most knitters are fairly stressed at this point.

1. Ask for a “last minute knitted gift”.
Just hold off on asking ANY knitters for a gift at this point. If you really want it, ask for it for valentine’s day.

(To be fair, only one has happened to me and some happened to a few of my knitting friends. For the rest of the items, it is safer just to warn non-knitters now before the rest happen!)

How is your last minute Christmas knitting coming?

There is Something About Christmas Knitting…

by Kristin Page on December 7, 2011

Every year I insist that Christmas knitting starts September 1st. Sure 116 days seems like enough to get the Christmas knitting done. This year, with the wedding, job and everything else going on with life I decided it was best to wait until November 1st and just have a very short Christmas knitting list.

Somewhere I forgot that without fail I add in a number of last minute knitted gifts (yes that is the name of a book, no I am not knitting from it).

Shhhh It's a Secret

Something about Christmas knitting that makes me want to cast on every thing in the world that I don’t normally knit. Let’s ignore the fact that I already have 15 projects on my needles, 6 of them have tight deadlines ranging from December 19th (in hopes that the post office plays in my favor) to December 24th.

Some pretty little....

In the past three weeks I’ve managed to add four “sets” of knitted gifts to my Christmas knitting list. Forgetting that there are 3 items on the list that are not even completed yet, one of which hasn’t even been started.

What could this be?

Yet somewhere in my mind I refuse to believe that we are really 18 days away from Christmas. There’s more time….

Right?

In that case, let’s not talk about that sweater for myself I cast on last week….

How is your Christmas knitting coming?

Baby Boy Baby Booties

by Kristin Page on November 25, 2011

Baby Booties

Stripy Baby Booties

Instead of Black Friday shopping, I’m heading off to a baby shower for a little baby boy for my new cousin-in-laws. It is hard to go to a baby shower and not bring anything hand knit.

One of my favorite patterns in the end is the Stripy Bootees by Zoe Mellor from 50 Baby Bootees to Knit
. I’ve made this pattern for a few little ones in the past and couldn’t pass up how cute they look in the end.

I used Berroco Comfort DK and size 3 needles. I made the 6-9 month size so he has some room to grow. It’s always so sad when you knit newborn size gifts and the babies only can wear them once or grow out of them so fast. I think it’s so much more fun to watch them grow into their hand knits!

I hope everyone in the US had a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe this Black Friday!

My “Grandma’s Christmas Stocking”

by Kristin Page on November 14, 2011

It is about the time of the year where the Christmas stockings hit the needles. Generally it is knitting for a new cousin (marrying into the family or being born into the family). While I do have a few to make this year, my first stop was fixing my own stocking.

Years ago my stocking got a LITTLE too close to the fireplace. As any acrylic yarn would do it melted. Luckily only the toe was melted off.

A few years ago my mom started sending me home from Christmas with my stocking in hopes that I would finally fix the toe of the stocking. I’ve never cut anyone’s knitting before, let alone my grandma’s!

On Friday night Aaron came into the office to find me with a pair of scissors and this:

Christmas Stocking Toe

Have no fear! The stocking did not sit in pieces for long. Luckily the melting only happened at the toe. A little bit of cutting and the toe was as good as new!

The red is a little bit off but it’s not all that noticeable. Considering it was knit 26 years later, I’d say they match pretty well! Now about those other stockings…

A Hat for Hubby

by Kristin Page on November 13, 2011

Aaron's First Hat

Aaron's First Hat

There is an old tale in knitting that says you are not allowed to knit a sweater for a man until you are married to him. This has carried over into a number of aspects of knitting including a book called Never Knit Your Man a Sweater (Unless You’ve Got the Ring). It’s a fantastic book for men’s knits!

With all of that being said, I’ve never knit for Aaron, until now!

A few weeks ago when I was making hats for my dad, Aaron asked where his hat was. So when we left for our mini-honeymoon I took some extra yarn I had from my dad’s hats and made a hat for Aaron. His FIRST knit gift!

This was knit out of some Paton’s Lace held doubled and it is the Turn a Square Pattern. I used US 4 and 6 needles for it.

His hat was finished just in time for the first snow in Northwest Indiana. Don’t worry the weather soon shot back up to 70 degrees! Now if only it would stay that way for the next few months! :)

Happy November!

by Kristin Page on November 6, 2011

Wow, what a busy few months. I swear I did not forget about you, life has been JUST a little bit busy! In the midst of finalizing a wedding, dealing with some family stuff and a vacation to Las Vegas… I quit the job I’ve been at for 4.5 years and started a brand new one! I’ve loved every minute of it and it was the perfect opportunity and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

With all of that going on, the knitting was lacking just a little bit! I wanted to make sure to get the blog updated with as much as I can remember from the last few months!

Starting things off, for his birthday I knit my dad an Angry Bird. This pattern was great and the only thing I strayed away from was the way the eyes were done. Instead of doing the duplicate stitch eyes, I went ahead and just did a small i-cord that wrapped around.

Angry Birds

I couldn’t go to my wedding without a few pieces of hand knit items. So I knit my garter and my socks for the reception. I knew I wouldn’t stay in dress shoes all night so after the ceremony I switched into more comfortable shoes.

Wedding SocksThe beautiful sock yarn was gifted to me from Jen at Piddleloop back at the end of March when I was having a bad week. It fit perfect with my wedding colors so I had to get them knit up!

My GarterThe garter was some leftover JKnits from my Wendy Knits KAL from earlier this summer!

One of the Turn a Square HatsMy dad is in need of some hats so the week before the wedding I knocked out three hats for him. I don’t have the yarns that I used but each hat was made using the Turn a Square pattern.

Breast Cancer SocksIt seemed fitting that my October socks should be the breast cancer awareness socks I picked up at Stitches Midwest. I finished them on November 1st but had started them on October 1st.

My November socks are on the needles but they are a secret as they will be a Christmas present. I also have a hat for Aaron and a few Christmas stockings being made.

I promise more updates soon, as I’m settling into life with my husband! :)

Dear Blog

by Kristin Page on August 14, 2011

Blue Moon Fiber Arts March 2011 Rockin Sock ClubDear Blog,

I’m sorry that I’ve been away for awhile. It’s not that I haven’t been knitting… the time to write about my knitting has just been missing.

Since we last talked, I’ve gotten a lot done. In between weekend trips and late nights of work, I’ve managed to get a lot of knitting done. I also listed some new hand dyed sock yarn up at The Knitted Geek shop. I promise I’ve been busy.

I’ve finished 5 pair of baby booties, unfortunately I don’t have a picture to show you. I also finished an adorable football hat from Itty-Bitty Hats. I’d show you a picture but I recently switched hard drives and somehow lost the picture in transition. It was made especially for an Indianapolis Colts newborn, it was cute even if it wasn’t a Cleveland Browns or Chicago Bears hat.

On July 31st I managed to squeak in my July socks for the month. I was cutting it close but hey, I made it. With only missing one month and finishing three pairs of socks in January… I’m still well on my way to 12 pair for the year.

The yarn is Socks that Rock Lightweight in the colorway Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, I used my Signature US 2 DPNs. Needless to say, I’m a fan!

While we’re at it… let’s pretend that I spent the weekend working on all of the “deadline” knitting that I have going on…

Except, that would be a lie.

You see when a situation that was completely out of my control landed in my lap on Thursday, I did what I always do when I can’t control something… I cast on a sock. 12 episodes of Make it or Break (don’t judge me) it later I might just have a finished Monkey Sock…

Monkey Sock in Octopus's Garden

Monkey Sock in Three Irish Girls "Octopus's Garden"

For the record, I’m in love with this yarn and may need to add some more of it to the collection… I mean stash… I mean to knit pile…

With all of that being said blog, I promise I’ll be back more regularly. This week you should keep your fingers crossed to see some finished baby knitting that has a deadline.

Love Always,
Kristin

PS. In case you’re wondering… I have already cast on the second one and fully plan on knitting on it for the rest of the night while watching the last two episodes of Make it or Break it on Netflix.
